pump.fun co-founder blames LIBRA for the incident, while saying that the market demand for meme coins will not disappear

PANews reported on February 18 that Alon Cohen, co-founder of pump.fun, posted on the X platform that he was disgusted by the recent events surrounding LIBRA, accusing the people behind the project of sacrificing the interests of users, the ecosystem and the country for personal gain, and calling for the relevant responsible persons to be punished as they should be. He also said that if you know of any improper behavior by any subject in the ecosystem, you should speak up bravely. He also opened private messages and was willing to help those who might be in trouble. The events of this weekend made him sad because pump fun was designed to solve these problems. He believes that the participation of middlemen such as "development teams" and market makers is ridiculous. Creating meme coins should be simple enough for everyone to do, and the existence of such entities makes it easy for anyone to be exploited.

Although many people have called for the "end of meme coins" due to these events, Alon believes that user demand for permissionless on-chain creation and speculation will not disappear. This type of behavior has long existed in areas such as Dogecoin, the ICO boom, and NFT/DeFi. In an attention-driven economy, users will undoubtedly continue to trade world events, culture, and technology.

Nonetheless, it is critical for platforms like Pump Fun to provide guardrails to ensure user safety, by focusing on educating users on safe and ethical token creation, optimizing the onboarding process for new traders, and strengthening user protection at the interface level.
