Trump urges EU to make unilateral concessions, EU insists on "reciprocity"

PANews reported on May 23 that according to the Financial Times, people familiar with the matter revealed that Trump's trade negotiators are forcing the EU to unilaterally reduce tariffs on US goods, and said that without concessions, the EU will not be able to make progress in the negotiations, which means that the EU will face more tariffs. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer plans to inform EU Trade Commissioner Šefčović today that the "explanatory notes" recently submitted by the EU for the negotiations did not meet US expectations. The United States is dissatisfied with the EU's proposal that the two sides only jointly reduce tariffs, rather than committing to unilateral tariff cuts like other trading partners. In addition, the EU did not include its proposed digital tax in the negotiation agenda as requested by the United States. People familiar with the matter said that the EU has been pushing for a commonly recognized framework text for the negotiations, but there are still significant differences between the two sides' positions.
