PANews reported on May 29 that according to Jinshi, a federal court in the United States (the United States International Trade Court) blocked US President Trump's "Liberation Day" tariffs from taking effect on Wednesday, ruling that Trump's invocation of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to impose comprehensive tariffs on the grounds of trade deficit, etc., was an act of overstepping his authority. The Manhattan-based International Trade Court said that the US Constitution gives Congress exclusive power to manage trade with other countries, and the president's international emergency powers to protect the US economy cannot override this. The lawsuit was filed by the nonpartisan Liberty Justice Center on behalf of five small American businesses that import goods from tariff-targeted countries, and it is the first major legal challenge to Trump's tariffs. These companies all said that the tariffs will harm their business capabilities. The lawsuit is one of seven court challenges to Trump's tariff policy, and there are also challenges from 13 US states and other small business groups.
The Trump administration has filed a notice of appeal after a federal court halted its trade measures.
