Singaporean Prime Minister Deepfake Video Used in Cryptocurrency and Immigration Scams

PANews reported on March 7 that according to Bloomberg, Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong's deepfake videos were used to promote cryptocurrencies, money-making scams, and permanent residency application services. Lawrence Wong has warned the public on social media to be vigilant and not to respond to such scams or disclose personal information, and attached screenshots of videos marked as scams.

The Singapore government has stepped up its efforts to combat financial fraud and cybercrime in recent years. In January, it passed a new law allowing the police to restrict the bank accounts of suspected fraud victims and is considering caning for some fraud-related crimes. In 2024, the number of fraud cases in Singapore surged by 11% to 51,501, with total losses reaching S$1.1 billion (about US$827 million), a year-on-year increase of 70%.
