UK launches digital driver's license and digital wallet plans to modernize public services

PANews reported on January 22 that according to the Financial Times, the British government announced the launch of a digital driver's license and digital wallet application, which will include documents such as driver's licenses, veterans' ID cards, criminal record certificates and welfare eligibility certificates by 2027, and may be expanded to digital passports. The application will use facial recognition technology to verify user identities as part of efforts to modernize public services and boost economic growth. Technology Minister Peter Kyle said the plan is not mandatory, but the goal is to make it more attractive. In addition, the government plans to launch a series of artificial intelligence tools to improve decision-making efficiency and reduce consulting costs. However, experts point out that successful digital transformation requires large-scale investment and acceptance of potential risks of failure.
