Argentine lawyers file lawsuit against DOJ and FBI over LIBRA crisis

PANews reported on February 18 that according to Cointelegraph, citing Argentina's El Clarín newspaper, on February 17, an Argentine law firm filed a criminal complaint with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), accusing the mastermind behind the collapse of the LIBRA token and requesting an investigation into the role of Argentine President Javier Milei. In another legal battlefield, the Citizens Alliance ARI also filed a criminal complaint on February 17, asking the Department of Justice to investigate allegations of bribery and fraud allegedly promoted by President Milei, adding that "the government cannot be both an athlete and a referee."

These latest legal challenges build on criminal charges previously filed in Argentina, accusing President Milei of engaging in fraud by supporting the token. Meanwhile, the government has been working to distance the Argentine president from the scandal, saying that President Milei was "deceived in good faith by traders who launched LIBRA" and that he was unaware of the financing mechanism. President Milei may eventually face impeachment charges after the country's Fintech Chamber of Commerce admitted that LIBRA may have been a "rug pull." "This scandal has embarrassed us internationally, so we must file a request for the president's impeachment," said opposition lawmaker Leandro Santoro.

On February 17, US President Trump posted on Truth Social, sharing a photo of Argentine President Javier Milei and captioned: "If printing money can eliminate poverty, then printing diplomas can eliminate stupidity."
