PANews reported on March 20 that according to Jinshi, although Indian officials are eager to appease the United States by reducing trade barriers, US President Trump said that India will be subject to reciprocal tariffs from April 2. Trump said in an interview on Wednesday local time that India is "one of the countries with the highest tariffs in the world." "I believe they may reduce these tariffs significantly, but on April 2, we will impose reciprocal tariffs on them." Although Trump has repeatedly stated that India will not be exempted from the tariffs on April 2, Indian officials have been more optimistic. Indian Commerce Minister Goyal visited the United States earlier this month and said that he had "forward-looking discussions" with Trump officials on a trade deal and that the two sides hope to reach an agreement before this fall.
