PANews reported on February 25th that, according to Axios , the U.S. Department of Defense has reached an agreement with Elon Musk 's xAI , allowing its large-scale model Grok access to classified systems used for the most sensitive intelligence, weapons development, and battlefield operations, and supporting "all legitimate uses" as required by the Pentagon. Previously, Anthropic Claude, the only company with access to the system, faced penalties for refusing to open it for mass surveillance of Americans and fully autonomous weapons development, and was deemed a "supply chain risk." The report indicates that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth will issue an ultimatum to Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei , while the Pentagon is simultaneously accelerating negotiations with Google Gemini and OpenAI regarding access to classified systems and "all legitimate uses" terms.
The Pentagon plans to replace Claude with Grok to promote the "all-legal-use" standard for military AI models.
