Previously, in January 2025, the group kidnapped Balland and his partner in central France, cutting off one of his fingers in an attempt to force him to transfer approximately $11.5 million worth of Bitcoin. Police rescued the hostages and arrested 10 people near the crime scene at the time. The last suspect subsequently fled to Spain, changing residences several times before being arrested near Malaga. The Spanish court is proceeding with his extradition to France for trial under the EU arrest warrant mechanism.
