A Maryland man faces up to 30 years in prison for alleged involvement in the $54 million Uranium Finance hack.

PANews reported on March 31 that, according to The Block, Jonathan Spalletta, a Maryland man, faces up to 30 years in prison for allegedly hacking the decentralized exchange Uranium Finance twice in 2021. The indictment states that Spalletta stole approximately $1.4 million in his first attack, and weeks later exploited a smart contract vulnerability to steal another $53.3 million, causing the exchange to shut down due to a lack of funds.

Spalletta used the stolen money to purchase millions of dollars worth of rare Pokémon and Magic: The Gathering cards, as well as a piece of "original wing material from the Wright brothers' airplane, which was carried to the lunar surface by astronaut Neil Armstrong during the first moon landing." U.S. prosecutors stated that Spalletta had claimed "cryptocurrency is just fake internet money," but theft is theft. In February 2025, U.S. authorities seized $31 million worth of cryptocurrency from the April 2021 hack.
