PANews reported on April 1st that, according to CriptoNoticias, the Spanish National Securities Market Commission has approved CaixaBank as the sixth bank in the country to obtain a cryptocurrency service provider license under the MiCA framework. Previously authorized institutions include BBVA, Openbank (Santander Group), Cecabank, Renta 4 Banco, and Kutxabank. BBVA was the first to receive approval in March 2025 and launched Bitcoin and Ethereum trading and custody services on its mobile app in July of the same year. Kutxabank received its license a few days before CaixaBank's approval and plans to launch Bitcoin, Ethereum, and USDC custody and trading services through its app and website. The MiCA license acts as a European passport, allowing licensed institutions to operate compliantly within the EU. The transition period for cryptocurrency service providers in Spain will end on June 30, 2026, at which point only authorized institutions will be legally allowed to provide services.
