PANews reported on April 10th that, according to The Block, a hearing was held in the Southern District of New York federal court regarding the case of Tornado Cash developer Roman Storm. Judge Katherine Polk Failla stated at the end of the hearing that "this involves too many issues" and that time was needed to process both sides' arguments. Government lawyers argued that Storm's improvements and updates to Tornado Cash helped criminals launder money and profited him personally. Storm's lawyers maintained that creating a cryptocurrency mixing service was not illegal and that Storm did not build Tornado Cash for illegal activities. Government lawyers also argued that funds mixed along with criminal funds could also be subject to prosecution, a statement that caused an uproar in the courtroom. Storm had previously been convicted of one count of unlicensed money transfer, but the jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict on both money laundering and sanctions evasion charges. Prosecutors requested a retrial on both charges later this year in March.
The outcome of the Storm case, which involves Tornado Cash developer Storm, remains unclear. The judge stated that the case involves too many issues.
