US sanctions Cambodian senator suspected of involvement in cryptocurrency scam ring

PANews reported on April 24 that, according to The Block, the U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has sanctioned Cambodian Senator Kok An, accusing him of controlling multiple "scam parks" in the country that lure Americans into sending cryptocurrency with promises of high returns. OFAC also sanctioned 28 individuals and entities within his network. This comes a day after police raided two scam centers in Poipet, a city on the Cambodian-Thai border.

OFAC stated that scammers use friendships or romantic relationships as bait to trick victims into sending cryptocurrency through seemingly legitimate investment platforms. Some of the perpetrators are themselves victims of human trafficking, forced to commit crimes under threats of violence. OFAC also seized over 500 fraudulent domain names used for cryptocurrency investment scams. Last September, OFAC sanctioned a transnational organized crime network in Southeast Asia, including Cambodia.
