Boos erupt at US graduation ceremonies as anti-AI sentiment intensifies.

PANews reported on May 21 that, according to The Paper, the sentiments held by some Americans regarding the development of artificial intelligence (AI) were evident during this year's graduation season. Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt recently sparked controversy by publicly discussing AI in his commencement address at the University of Arizona. Schmidt discussed the inclusive value of technology but also acknowledged that internet platforms amplify extreme emotions and worsen the public communication environment, posing significant negative risks. His emphasis on the irreversibility of the AI era drew criticism from many students in the audience. At recent graduation ceremonies at several American universities, many speakers who expressed support for AI development were met with boos from students.

On May 13, real estate executive Gloria Caulfield stated at the University of Central Florida's commencement ceremony that AI is "the next industrial revolution." This statement was immediately met with boos from arts and humanities graduates. "Well, I've hit a polarizing topic," Caulfield said. Earlier this month, music executive Scott Bockett, who discovered Taylor Swift in 2005, told graduates at Middle Tennessee State University, "AI is changing the way we create right now." This statement also drew boos from the audience. At Glendale Community College's commencement ceremony in Arizona, an AI system missed several graduates' names. The college's president, Tiffany Hernandez, blamed the error on technology, which also drew boos.
