The NHL and the CFTC signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen compliance oversight of the sports prediction market.

PANews reported on May 21 that, according to The Block, the CFTC and the National Hockey League (NHL) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to share information and collaborate on oversight regarding "maintaining the integrity of contracts for professional hockey and related events." NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman stated that the agreement will strengthen the league's existing integrity monitoring system and enhance its ability to identify and mitigate potential risks. This move continues the trend of the CFTC collaborating with sports leagues; in March of this year, the CFTC signed a similar MoU with Major League Baseball (MLB). With prediction market platforms such as Kalshi and Polymarket rapidly developing after the 2024 US presidential election, the CFTC is strengthening its oversight of event contracts and sports prediction markets and asserting its "exclusive jurisdiction" through rule consultations and enforcement actions.
