PANews reported on December 4th that OpenAI's nonprofit foundation announced it will donate $40.5 million this year to 208 nonprofit organizations across the United States that support local communities. This is the largest external philanthropic commitment the AI giant has made to date. The donation aims to "expand opportunities in artificial intelligence" and will support work in three areas: AI literacy and public understanding, community innovation, and economic opportunity. This donation is OpenAI's largest nonprofit expenditure to date, but it is still a small fraction compared to the approximately $130 billion in equity value held by the foundation following its recent corporate restructuring. A recent tax filing shows that the OpenAI Foundation donated $7.5 million last year.
