PANews reported on February 13 that according to the Chicago Tribune, six men were suspected of kidnapping a family of three and a nanny in Chicago in October 2024, and forced the victims to transfer about $15 million in cryptocurrency, and then released them five days later. Currently, $9 million is still unaccounted for.
The FBI investigation showed that the kidnappers entered the victim's home under the pretext of damaging the garage door and threatened him with a gun. The victim was moved several times and forced to trade in cryptocurrency before being released on November 1. Surveillance footage showed that the kidnappers had appeared in McDonald's, Culver's, Subway and other places.
One of the suspects, Zehuan Wei (34), was arrested at the US-Mexico border on January 17, and another suspect is believed to have fled to China. The six were charged with kidnapping on December 13, 2024, and the case is still under investigation.
