PANews reported on May 21 that according to The Block, Coinbase submitted documents to the Maine Attorney General's Office, confirming that the data breach in December 2024 affected 69,461 users. Hackers bribed overseas customer service staff to gain system permissions and stole KYC information including names, addresses, and email addresses, but did not involve passwords, private keys, and user funds. The documents show that hackers demanded a ransom of $20 million to threaten to disclose data. Coinbase previously said that the number of affected users was less than 1% of the total number, and the estimated cost of follow-up would be $180 million to $400 million.
