코인데스크가 블록체인 보안 전문가 잭XBT(ZachXBT)를 인용, "코인베이스 사용자는 지난 2개월 동안 소셜 엔지니어링(social engineering) 공격으로 6,500만 달러 이상 피해를 입었으며, 이러한 공격으로 매년 약 3억 달러가 손실된 것으로 추정된다"고 분석했다. 이어 "해커들은 탈취한 개인 데이터를 이용해 코인베이스의 공식 커뮤니케이션을 모방한 가짜 이메일을 보내는 방식을 사용했다. 여기에는 사용자에게 허위 월렛으로 자금을 이체하도록 유도하는 사례도 포함된다"고 설명했다.
