A US court ruled that the FBI was not liable for destroying a hard drive containing 3,400 bitcoins; approximately 3.7 million bitcoins may now be permanently lost.

PANews reported on November 6 that, according to Cointelegraph, a US court ruled that the FBI is not responsible for destroying a hard drive containing 3,400 bitcoins.

Previously, the hard drive owner had repeatedly denied possessing a large amount of Bitcoin, causing the government to abandon further searches for Bitcoin and, as is customary, clean up any usable devices after being notified. This incident increases the total amount of irrecoverable Bitcoin loss, with an estimated 3.7 million Bitcoins (18% of the total supply) potentially permanently lost.
