PANews reported on May 20 that ZKsync officially published a post on the X platform stating that the latest ZKsync upgrade proposal focuses on optimizing elliptic curve precompilation and adding a new ModExp precompilation function. The Gas fee for verifying a typical zkSNARK proof will drop from about 6.8 million to about 370,000, a reduction of about 94%. With this upgrade, elliptic curve operations (ECAdd, ECMul, ECPairing) will be implemented directly in the circuit, reducing the cost of verifying ZK proofs by more than 90%. A new ModExp precompilation function has been added for fast modular exponentiation operations. This is critical for many different cryptographic application scenarios, such as RSA and ZK proof verification. After the upgrade, developers do not need to take any action. Existing contracts that already rely on these precompiled functions do not need to be redeployed. After the upgrade, the call will automatically resolve to the new circuit implementation. The precompilation upgrade has been launched on the ZKsync Era test network.
