According to POLITICO, Polish cryptocurrency exchange Zondacrypto is embroiled in a controversy involving allegations of regulatory ambiguity, political donations, and ties to Russian funds. CEO Przemysław Kral previously disclosed that the company possessed a wallet containing approximately 4,500 BTC, worth about $330 million, but the company currently has no access to these assets because former head Sylwester Suszek failed to transfer the private keys during the 2021 handover and has been missing for several years.
As previously reported by AP, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk accused Zondacrypto of being backed by "Russian funds" and of funding politicians associated with the former Polish nationalist conservative government and the CPAC event to be held in Poland in 2025. Tusk claimed that the company's funds were linked to Russian organized crime and intelligence agencies. Zondacrypto denied the allegations of misappropriating customer funds and stated that it was cooperating with Polish authorities.
This incident is also intertwined with the controversy surrounding Poland's cryptocurrency regulatory bill. Polish President Karol Nawrocki has twice vetoed the bill regulating the cryptocurrency market, while the government claims that the bill aims to implement the EU's MiCA rules and strengthen the regulation of the cryptocurrency market. The Polish parliament had previously failed to overturn the president's veto.
