PANews reported on May 15 that, according to Reuters, the Polish parliament passed a cryptocurrency regulation bill on May 15 to implement the EU's Crypto Asset Market Regulation Act (MiCA). Poland is required to complete the implementation of the relevant rules by July.
The legislation comes against the backdrop of allegations of a large-scale fraud involving the Polish cryptocurrency exchange Zondacrypto. Polish prosecutors have launched a multi-million dollar fraud investigation, with user losses estimated at over 350 million zlotys (approximately $95.93 million), and thousands of users currently unable to withdraw their funds.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk previously stated that Zondacrypto may be involved with "Russian funds" and foreign political influence. The exchange's founder, Sylwester Suszek, disappeared in 2022, and its current head, Przemyslaw Kral, reportedly has traveled to Israel.
Polish President Karol Nawrocki had previously vetoed the MiCA implementation bill twice, arguing that the regulatory requirements were too heavy and could lead to the loss of crypto companies.
