Two defendants were sentenced for selling over 900 million pieces of illegal personal information using virtual currency and for carrying out "opening box" cyberbullying.

PANews reported on May 9th that, according to IT Home, the Supreme People's Court today released typical cases of crimes involving the infringement of citizens' personal information and related crimes. One case involved online harassment related to "opening boxes," in which two defendants illegally obtained over 900 million pieces of citizens' personal information data. Between 2023 and 2025, defendants Lin and Wang illegally obtained citizens' personal information data through encrypted communication tools and other internet channels, and then sold it for profit using virtual currency payments. An investigation revealed that Lin illegally obtained over 600 million pieces of citizens' personal information data, and Wang illegally obtained over 300 million pieces. In 2025, defendant Lin, along with Wang (whose case is being handled separately) and others, used encrypted communication tools to establish groups, acting as group administrators, and posted illegal and criminal information in the groups, including information involving invasion of privacy and insults. The group had over 2,000 members.

The Haidian District People's Court of Beijing sentenced defendant Lin to six years and six months imprisonment and a fine of 60,000 yuan for the crime of infringing on citizens' personal information; and sentenced him to one year imprisonment and a fine of 10,000 yuan for the crime of illegally using information networks, to be served concurrently for a total sentence of seven years imprisonment and a fine of 70,000 yuan. Defendant Wang was sentenced to five years and six months imprisonment and a fine of 50,000 yuan for the same crime.
