PANews reported on May 19th that Echo Protocol released an update on its X platform stating that earlier today , it discovered unauthorized eBTC activity on Monad, resulting in unauthorized issuance and related financial losses. The investigation revealed that the issue stemmed from the leakage of administrator keys affecting Monad deployment. According to current findings, approximately $816,000 worth of funds on Monad were affected. The Monad network itself was unaffected and is currently operating normally. The team has been actively investigating potential cross-chain risks, coordinating with ecosystem partners, and implementing additional preventative measures. Control of the administrator keys has now been successfully regained, and the remaining 955 eBTC held by the attacker have been destroyed.
The incident is currently limited to Monad; no evidence of impact has been found on Aptos. aBTC on Aptos and eBTC on Monad are independent, non-cross-chain assets. As a precaution, Echo has suspended cross-chain functionality deployed on Monad and upgraded related contracts, while also completely suspending the operation of the Aptos cross-chain bridge. The team is conducting a comprehensive review of the affected deployments and bridge infrastructure and is advising users not to interact with unofficial links.
