PANews reported on May 25 that Chris Olah, co-founder of the artificial intelligence company Anthropic, was invited to attend a special press conference in the Vatican's Synod Chamber. As Pope Leo XIV released his first encyclical focusing on AI ethics, *Magnifica humanitas*, Olah, as a rare representative of the secular tech community, delivered a speech, issuing a strong appeal regarding the future and governance of artificial intelligence.
In response to the rapid advancements in AI, Olach emphasized three core viewpoints at the conference:
Olach firmly opposes the autonomy of "tech oligarchs": He clearly stated that the development direction and regulation of artificial intelligence should not be left solely to cutting-edge AI labs and tech giants. He called on religious leaders, governments, and broad civil society to participate deeply in the supervision and guidance of AI as a core force.
Warning of the risk of large-scale labor substitution: Addressing clergy and global media, Olach frankly stated that the idea of AI technology "replacing human labor on a large scale" in the future is not just science fiction, but a real possibility that is approaching.
Calling for historic moral responsibility: Olach emphasized that if a wave of structural unemployment caused by technology erupts, society as a whole must act together to support and assist those left behind by the technological age. He defined this aid effort as a "moral imperative of historic proportions."
