PANews reported on May 29th that Base, the Ethereum Layer 2 network incubated by Coinbase, announced the activation of the Azul upgrade on its mainnet. This is its first independent network upgrade since separating from Optimism Superchain. Azul introduces a multi-proof system combining TEE (Trusted Execution Environment) and ZK (Zero-Knowledge) proofs. Either proof can independently complete the final confirmation of the state. When both proofs are consistent, the finality of withdrawals can be shortened to about one day. In case of conflict, the permissionless ZK proof overrides the TEE proof to enhance censorship resistance and decentralization. The upgrade also unifies the execution client to base-reth-node, introduces the base-consensus consensus client based on OP Kona, reduces the number of empty blocks per day from about 200 to about 2, and supports 5,000 transactions per second in stress tests.
Base has activated the Azul upgrade on the mainnet, achieving a peak throughput of 5000 TPS.
