From the perspective of architecture and ecology: Is Sonic SVM just Solana’s L2?

  • Sonic SVM is a specialized scaling solution for high-frequency applications like games within the Solana ecosystem, not a traditional "layer2" like Ethereum's, as it addresses unique needs such as fast-response interactions and avoids overloading the main chain.
  • It offers customized features like tailored data structures, caching mechanisms, and parallel processing for gaming, along with independent governance and economic models, enhancing performance beyond Solana's current ~2,500-4,000 TPS capacity.
  • Unlike general-purpose layer2 solutions, Sonic SVM aims to expand Solana's ecosystem into diverse applications (e.g., gaming and finance) while improving user experience by reducing transaction failures critical for high-frequency scenarios.
  • Sonic SVM aligns with Solana's broader "Rollup-Centric" ecosystem strategy, alongside projects like EclipseFND and SOON, to compete with Ethereum and achieve mass adoption.
  • Beyond Solana, Sonic SVM targets TikTok's massive Gen Z user base, aspiring to become an on-chain app layer akin to TON's integration with Telegram, leveraging TikTok's commercial potential for blockchain adoption.
Summary

There has been a lot of discussion around @SonicSVM these days. After all, topics such as airdrops for TikTok users, Solana's "super" game chain, Solana L2, etc. are all fermenting at the same time, which is indeed quite eye-catching. So, how do we understand this new "layer2" in the Solana ecosystem?

1) It is not appropriate to call @solana "layer2". It always makes people feel the burden of Ethereum layer2 ecosystem. It is natural to ask, why does Solana, which focuses on high performance, still need layer2? The reason is easy to understand. Sonic SVM is a scaling solution specifically for games and applications.

Even if it is defined as layer2, it is a specific layer2 and is very different from the traditional Univesal general layer2. The existence of this type of expansion solution is more to solve the special needs of high-frequency interactions and fast-response applications such as games, and to avoid the Solana main chain from processing a large number of high-frequency transactions (such as more than 4,000 TPS loads). There will be freezes and delays, affecting the user experience.

Therefore, I prefer to define Sonic SVM as a specific extension solution specifically for high-frequency applications such as games.

2) This means that Sonic SVM can provide customized functions and performance according to the specific needs of games and applications. For example, it can set up special data structures, caching mechanisms, and parallel processing solutions for game application scenarios. In addition, Sonic SVM can also customize its own governance mechanism and economic model, and can make decisions and allocate resources independently of the main chain.

Although Solana's main chain TPS is actually about 2,500-4,000 transactions per second, it is currently crowded with various MEME and PumpFun tokens, and there is a significant failure rate in user transactions. This is intolerable in some game scenarios that require high-frequency interactions. Any failure may greatly reduce the user experience.

Therefore, by trying this expansion solution specifically for games and specific application areas with high experience requirements, we can expand the financial application scenarios of the Solana ecosystem and expand it to a wider range of diversified applications to attract more developers and users to join the Solana ecosystem.

Coincidentally, the previously hotly discussed @EclipseFND modular expansion solution uses SVM as the execution layer based on the Ethereum ecosystem to provide expansion capabilities. Recently, the equally hotly discussed SOON has attempted to build the OP Stack of the Solana ecosystem from the perspective of RaaS commercial expansion to expand Solana in depth; Sonic SVM is undoubtedly one of the core scalability solutions.

All signs indicate that the Solana ecosystem is building its own "Rollup-Centric" ecosystem, making a new round of sprint towards its ultimate goal of Flip ETH.

3) However, it is not enough to simply position Sonic SVM as an optional expansion solution for Solana. From the recent Sonic airdrop to TikTok users, it is not difficult to see that Sonic SVM has greater ambitions beyond Solana: to benchmark TON and become the APP layer for TikTok to expand on the chain.

As we all know, @ton_blockchain has become a unique "application chain" framework relying on the huge user base of the Telegram social platform. Its seamless compatibility with on-chain wallets, DApps, and DeFi-like "mini-program" application scenarios has put it at the forefront of implementing the new generation of blockchain architecture and entering Mass Adoption.

The reason behind Sonic SVM's deep integration with TikTok is also aimed at this goal. After all, TikTok has a larger group of young people in Generation Z and has more outstanding commercial value. Building a "touch chain" environment based on TikTok will have more business prospects for future applications, which is much more sexy than simply positioning itself as Solana layer2.
