Analyst: Trump's Bitcoin reserves are not as optimistic as expected, traders are "disappointed"

PANews reported on March 7 that according to The Block, Bitcoin fell sharply by 4.91% after US President Donald Trump signed an executive order to establish a strategic reserve of Bitcoin today. Peter Chung, research director of Presto Research, said: "BTC did not show a parabolic reaction, which makes me think that there is a certain degree of 'Buy The Rumor, Sell The News' behavior in the market. The news was only released an hour ago, so the next few hours may continue to fluctuate as the market digests the various collision forces."

Nick Ruck, director of LVRG Research, noted that traders were “disappointed” because the Bitcoin reserve announcement was “less optimistic than they had hoped” because the reserve will be funded using Bitcoin obtained from criminal or civil asset forfeitures, rather than government purchases, Ruck added, “The announcement became a ‘sell the news’ event as the difference in expectations lowered expectations of buying pressure in the crypto market.” Meanwhile, Presto’s Chung noted that it will be worth watching to see whether the U.S. will mention how to acquire more Bitcoin in a budget-neutral manner, as well as further details on how non-Bitcoin assets will be handled.

Matt Hougan, chief investment officer at Bitwise, said that Trump's creation of a Bitcoin reserve "significantly reduces the likelihood that the U.S. government will one day 'ban' Bitcoin," and the news could also accelerate other countries' decisions to build their own strategic Bitcoin reserves "because it creates a short-term window for countries to preempt potential additional purchases by the United States." According to Bitwise executives, this also makes it more difficult for institutions such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to position Bitcoin as some kind of dangerous or unsuitable asset to hold.
