Pakistan to explore blockchain technology to process billions of dollars in overseas remittances

PANews March 10 news, according to CoinDesk, Bilal bin Saqib, chief adviser to Pakistan's finance minister and member of the newly established Pakistan Cryptocurrency Council (PCC), said on Monday that Pakistan is one of the top ten countries with the largest amount of overseas remittances and may use blockchain technology to simplify the overseas remittance process; from 2023 to 2024, overseas Pakistanis remitted more than 31 billion US dollars through traditional channels, but these channels are often cumbersome and expensive, with handling fees of more than 5%. He said: "The Pakistan Cryptocurrency Council will study blockchain-based remittance solutions to reduce costs and delays. In addition, we will invest in blockchain education, skills improvement programs and Web3 development to cultivate talents, promote employment and drive economic growth." The Pakistan Cryptocurrency Council is also exploring initiatives such as tokenizing real-world assets and establishing a regulatory sandbox, while ensuring compliance with the standards of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). FATF has removed Pakistan from the gray list in 2022.
