French telecom giant Orange teams up with OpenAI and Meta to develop AI models for African languages

PANews reported on November 30 that according to News.bitcoin, French telecom giant Orange will work with OpenAI and Meta to fine-tune AI large language models (LLMs) to understand African languages. Orange said that the customized AI model will enable its users in Africa to communicate with customer support and sales in their native language. In addition, the telecom operator said that the open source AI model will be provided to external parties with a "free license" for non-commercial use, such as public health and education. According to the statement, Orange also plans to promote AI innovation in these regional languages through cooperation with local startups and other technology companies. Its goal is to narrow the widening digital divide facing residents of the continent.

Orange said in a statement that it wants AI to be accessible to everyone in these regions, including illiterate and other disadvantaged groups. In addition to the agreement focusing on African languages, Orange said it has signed an agreement with OpenAI to enable it to directly access the latter's models. This access enables Orange to improve existing solutions. In addition, the independent arrangement will enable Orange to obtain advanced AI models in advance, allowing it to develop new applications such as AI-driven customer voice interactions.
