PANews reported on January 30 that Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick announced that establishing the Texas Bitcoin Reserve will be one of the legislative priorities in 2025. Currently, at least five US states, including Arizona and Utah, are advancing similar Bitcoin or cryptocurrency reserve legislation.
Several Texas officials have previously proposed related legislation. State Senator Charles Schwertner said on January 16 that establishing a Bitcoin reserve would put Texas at the forefront of the digital economy. As early as December 2024, Republican State Representative Giovanni Capriglione also proposed a bill to allow taxes to be paid in Bitcoin and used to create strategic reserves.
