PANews reported on November 19 that according to Cointelegraph, Heather Morgan, known as "Razzlekhan", was sentenced to 18 months in prison in a Bitcoin money laundering case related to the 2016 Bitfinex exchange hack . Colleen Kollar-Kotelly, a judge in the District Court of Washington, D.C., announced the verdict at a trial on November 18. Morgan pleaded guilty in August 2023 to conspiracy to launder money and defraud the United States.
Morgan and her husband Ilya Lichtenstein were previously charged with laundering bitcoin stolen from Bitfinex, with Lichtenstein also admitting to participating in the hack. Lichtenstein was sentenced to five years in prison on November 14, far less than the maximum 20-year sentence required by law, for providing "substantial assistance" in the investigation. The 119,754 bitcoins stolen by Lichtenstein in 2016 are now worth about $10.8 billion and were once the largest cryptocurrency seizure case by the U.S. Department of Justice.
