EU uses Digital Markets Act for the first time, Apple and Meta fined nearly $800 million

PANews reported on April 24 that according to Bloomberg, the European Union issued its first fine under the Digital Markets Act (DMA), fining Apple and Meta 500 million and 200 million euros respectively, totaling about 700 million euros (about 798 million U.S. dollars). The EU accused Apple of preventing developers from guiding users away from the App Store to purchase services, and Meta's ad-free subscription service was also found to be in violation. The two companies must make corrections within 60 days, otherwise they will face further penalties. The decision came at a time when the Trump administration strongly criticized EU technology regulation, and the amount of the fine was also milder than expected.
