PANews reported on February 25th that Bitcoin Depot, which operates approximately 8,800 encrypted ATMs in North America, announced it will mandate ID verification for every transaction made through its ATMs to strengthen anti-fraud and compliance efforts. The company is implementing this policy in phases starting this month, further tightening the rules after initially requiring users to submit ID when activating the service last October. This move aims to combat account sharing, identity theft, and account takeover. Previously, the attorneys general of Massachusetts and Iowa sued Bitcoin Depot for condoning scams targeting the elderly and accused it of charging hidden premiums; the Massachusetts lawsuit also demanded that the company add anti-fraud measures such as inquiry and refund processes for transactions exceeding $10,000.
