PANews reported on April 9th that, according to Chosun Biz, South Korean cryptocurrency exchange Bithumb has initiated asset seizure proceedings due to its inability to recover a portion of Bitcoin mistakenly distributed in February. During an event held on February 6th, Bithumb was supposed to distribute a total of 620,000 won to 249 winners, but mistakenly entered "Bitcoin" instead of "Korean Won," resulting in the erroneous distribution of 620,000 Bitcoins. Although the exchange canceled the distribution within minutes, some users had already sold their Bitcoins for cash or purchased other crypto assets, resulting in approximately 12.3 billion won worth of Bitcoins remaining unrecovered. Bithumb subsequently contacted customers one by one, and most users received refunds, but some refused to return their funds. Among them, the holder of 7 Bitcoins (worth approximately 700 million won at the time, now worth approximately 105 million won per Bitcoin) refused to return them, prompting Bithumb to apply for asset seizure and prepare to file a civil lawsuit. Legal experts generally believe that users who refuse to return unjustly obtained gains are more likely to lose their cases.
Bithumb failed to recover 700 million won worth of Bitcoin that were mistakenly distributed, and initiated seizure and preservation procedures.
