Georgia is installing large numbers of electricity meters in Mestia to combat illicit cryptocurrency mining.

PANews reported on June 2nd that, according to Crypto Briefing, the Georgian government is installing electricity meters on a large scale in the Mestia region to crack down on illegal cryptocurrency mining. The country's Deputy Prime Minister announced the launch of a comprehensive operation on June 1st, focusing on the city of Mestia in the Svaneti region. The core measure is the large-scale installation of electricity meters in all villages in the region, with law enforcement assisting in the implementation. By 2025, Mestia's electricity consumption is projected to reach 133 million kilowatt-hours, more than 13 times the electricity consumption of other similar towns in Georgia. The government estimates that illegal mining costs the national energy system 20 to 25 million lari annually.
