PANews reported on June 11 that, according to CoinDesk, bipartisan members of the U.S. House of Representatives have introduced a bill to establish a "Federal Cryptocurrency Theft Task Force," led by the Attorney General, to coordinate efforts to combat cryptocurrency theft cases caused by fraud and hacking. This task force would coordinate multiple departments, including the Department of Justice, the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Treasury Department, serving as the primary liaison and investigative coordination point for cryptocurrency theft cases. The proposers stated that, facing approximately $11 billion in annual losses from theft and fraud, current federal, state, and local law enforcement lacks uniformity in handling and coordinating cases. The new mechanism aims to provide victims with a single federal contact point and support local law enforcement agencies in conducting investigations on a voluntary basis.
US lawmakers from both parties have proposed establishing a federal crypto-theft task force, headed by the Attorney General.
