Going all out to build an "Everything Exchange" all-in-one financial account.

On June 17, Coinbase announced a systemic upgrade on social media, listing a series of products and features including an AI investment advisor, AI agent trade execution, tokenized stocks, Pre-IPO perpetual contracts, thematic equity index perpetuals, stock and crypto options, prediction market upgrades, an instant token launch channel, a USDC-collateralized credit card, staked asset lending protection, a global unified liquidity pool, a modular advanced trading platform, and multiple Base ecosystem infrastructure items.

Artemis CEO commented that Coinbase is the winner in AI-native finance, though the U.S. stock market reacted tepidly. As of today's close, COIN shares edged down 0.21% to $169.27, while after-hours trading saw a slight 0.44% gain.

AI: Closing the Loop from "Advice" to "Controlled Execution"

The most closely watched part of Coinbase's update is Coinbase Advisor. This is an SEC-registered (via Coinbase Advisors, LLC as a Registered Investment Advisor), AI-driven in-app investment advisor, now available to U.S. Coinbase One members. It can provide personalized multi-asset strategy suggestions based on user portfolios, real-time news, and Coinbase internal data, including tax-loss harvesting designs and converting breaking news into trading ideas across crypto, prediction markets, and equities. The system emphasizes that it does not automatically execute trades; users still make their own decisions, but they gain 24/7 access to professional-grade analytical support, lowering the barrier for ordinary investors to access complex strategies.

Meanwhile, Coinbase for Agents officially launched, integrating with Base MCP (Model Context Protocol) and the x402 protocol, allowing users to connect any AI agent (such as Claude, ChatGPT, etc.) directly to their Coinbase account. Users define the agent's task boundaries using natural language—for example, "target an allocation of 60% BTC, 20% ETH, 20% SOL and gradually rebalance"—and the agent can then execute spot and derivatives trades within an isolated sub-account or clearly authorized scope. In terms of security design, the agent can only access assets and trade size limits explicitly permitted by the user, functioning more like a "gift card than a bank account."

In terms of tradable asset classes, Coinbase is evolving into an 'all-asset class exchange.'

  • Tokenized Stocks: Backed 1:1 by underlying real equity, holders enjoy dividends, shareholder rights, and on-chain utility (lending, staking, gifting, etc.). Supports 24/7 trading, opening to non-U.S. users starting next month.
  • Pre-IPO Perpetual Contracts & Thematic Equity Index Perpetuals: Pre-IPO perpetual contracts for companies like SpaceX are already live as price discovery tools, with plans to cover Anthropic, OpenAI, and others; simultaneously launching thematic equity index perpetual products such as AI10, China10, Defense10, and Tech100.
  • Stock & Crypto Options: Trading in stock options and crypto options covering major U.S. stocks, indices, and ETFs will be rolled out in phases, backed by integrated support from resources like Deribit.
  • Prediction Market Upgrade: New crypto binary contracts (BTC, ETH, SOL, etc., with "up/down" markets ranging from 15-minute to annual intervals) and predictions spanning economics, politics, sports, and other categories.
  • Launches New Tab: Supports 'instant liquidity mapping and second-level trade execution' for on-chain native assets.

These products make the Coinbase Advanced trading platform the core entry point for cross-asset execution.

Connecting Liquidity, Payments, and Real-World Applications

Coinbase's update also includes building a global unified liquidity pool (U.S. spot + international derivatives + Deribit integration), planned to be implemented in the coming months; a Coinbase One Card upgrade—users can stake 500-5,000 USDC as collateral and earn 5% Bitcoin back on travel spending through a Travel Portal partnered with Booking Holdings/Agoda; staked asset lending expanded to cbETH (higher limits), JitoSOL (up to $100,000 limit), etc., with new liquidation protection mechanisms introduced.

Furthermore, the Base ecosystem is advancing simultaneously: B20 as a native token standard for Base, supporting any asset; the Base App launching a web version with enhanced multi-chain support and full asset coverage; enterprise-grade private transactions and a privacy ledger going live, enabling institutions to achieve instant settlement without exposing on-chain activity, suitable for B2B payments, private payroll, and other scenarios.

Crypto-backed mortgages were also highlighted in this update as a key real-world utility use case for crypto assets.

The new Coinbase Developer Platform and a full-stack payment solution (USDC, Base native, API-driven) launched simultaneously, supporting stablecoin payments and agent economy scenarios; a transfer protection feature enhances security for large assets through delayed withdrawals, customizable daily limits, and multi-party approval mechanisms.

The core logic of Coinbase's update is clear: a deepening of the Everything Exchange strategy. Users no longer need to choose between a traditional broker and a crypto platform; instead, a single account covers trading, investing, spending, lending, earning, and growth.

This thinking is reflected in three main threads: Balancing regulatory dividends with global consistency. The CFTC's approval for U.S. users to trade regulated crypto derivatives clears the path for products like crypto derivatives to return to the U.S. market; simultaneously adhering to a "globally available by default" principle, where international liquidity feeds back to U.S. users. The "reverse export" of crypto innovation. Crypto-native capabilities like the perpetual contract mechanism, instant on-chain trading channels, agent wallets, and the x402 payment protocol are systematically applied to equity indices, Pre-IPOs, prediction markets, and real-world assets.

Deep embedding of AI and the Agentic Economy. From Coinbase Advisor to Coinbase for Agents + Base MCP + x402 (execution layer, fully user-controlled), Coinbase is building a closed loop from insight to action, while controlling risk through isolated accounts and permission boundaries.

Exchanges like Binance, OKX, and Bitget are also aggressively laying out similar products. Binance rapidly accumulated significant volume on SpaceX Pre-IPO perpetual contracts and integrated on-chain prediction markets; OKX launched an Agent Trade Kit and Exchange OS, supporting AI agent automated trading and outcome markets; Bitget Stocks 2.0 has already driven cumulative spot trading volume for tokenized stocks past $1 billion.

Major offshore trading platforms are all accelerating the digitization of traditional financial assets (TradFi) and the seamless liquidity penetration of the AI agent trading track.

However, Coinbase's strategic thinking focuses more on systemic integration: leveraging SEC-registered investment advisor qualifications and CFTC derivatives access, with 1:1 real-equity-backed tokenized stocks, agent-controlled execution with isolated permissions, and crypto assets directly connecting to Fannie Mae-compliant mortgages, to build an "Everything Exchange" and a user's primary financial account, rather than simply following product trends.

In the short term, these updates are expected to boost user dwell time, trading frequency, and AUM on the Coinbase App, particularly appealing to active traders and Coinbase One members. The implementation of the modular Advanced platform and unified liquidity pool will further solidify its position among institutional and high-net-worth users. The Base Launches channel and agent tools may accelerate on-chain asset discovery and adoption, forming a positive flywheel.

In the medium to long term, Coinbase is attempting to define the next generation of financial infrastructure: using crypto as the settlement and ownership layer, AI as the intelligence hub, with compliance and user control as the boundaries.
