South Korea Establishes Inter-agency AI Crime Response Body to Combat Deepfake Fraud and Digital Crimes

PANews June 26 news, according to Xinhua News Agency, the South Korean government formed a cross-departmental consultative body on the 26th to tackle criminal acts using artificial intelligence (AI) technology, such as “digital sex crimes,” financial fraud, and false advertising. The new body, named the “Cross-Departmental Consultative Body for Responding to AI-Related Crimes,” draws members from 10 government agencies, including the Korea Communications Commission, the Ministry of Science and ICT, the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, the Financial Services Commission, and the National Police Agency. As South Korean media put it, with AI-linked crimes growing increasingly rampant, a single agency often struggles to cope, making it necessary to set up a cross-departmental body for coordination and cooperation.
