Oman: Ships Transiting the Strait of Hormuz May Need to Pay Fees

PANews June 26 news, according to informed sources, Oman has told European officials that the Strait of Hormuz cannot return to the pre-war state, and transit vessels may need to pay a certain fee. Sources said Omani officials stated they will always abide by international maritime law, but added that services related to strait pollution cleanup or vessel navigation may incur fees. It is unclear whether Oman indicated that all these fees are mandatory. Informed sources said Oman is analyzing the fee systems used at global chokepoints, including the Malacca Strait in Asia — where there is currently no mandatory shipping charge. Meanwhile, the United States, Europe, and Oman’s Gulf neighbors are increasingly concerned that Oman may jointly set up a fee system for the Strait of Hormuz with Iran.
