PANews reported on September 19th that, according to CoinDesk, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) conducted the country's largest cryptocurrency seizure to date, recovering over 56 million Canadian dollars in cryptocurrency from the TradeOgre exchange. This is a record seizure and the first successful dismantling of a cryptocurrency trading platform by Canadian police. The operation was the culmination of a year-long investigation by the Money Laundering Investigation Team, stemming from a tip from Europol in June 2024 alleging illegal activities on the platform. Police discovered that TradeOgre was not registered with the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada and failed to verify the identities of its customers. The RCMP alleges that funds flowing through the platform originated largely from illicit sources and that its anonymous account opening facilitated the concealment of funds by criminal syndicates. Analysis of transaction data is ongoing, and the investigation is ongoing, with possible charges to be filed.
