European Parliament to vote on tech sovereignty proposal in July

PANews reported on June 5 that according to Cointelegraph, the European Parliament's Industry, Research and Energy Committee (ITRE) passed a proposal report on technological sovereignty on June 3, and plans to vote on it at the plenary session in July. Sarah Knafo, the drafter of the proposal and a pro-Bitcoin MP, said that Europe needs to establish a digital ecosystem policy to catch up with China and the United States, with the following focuses: 1) Eliminating barriers to private innovation investment; 2) Developing energy-saving computing and blockchain infrastructure; 3) Protecting digital financial privacy. Knafo said that if the right-wing party supports it, it is expected to pass, but the left-wing pressure will obstruct the centrists.

Knafo once publicly opposed the digital euro and advocated the establishment of a strategic reserve of Bitcoin, but ECB President Lagarde explicitly rejected it in January 2025, emphasizing that central bank reserves need to be "liquid and safe." Analysts are cautious about the passage of the proposal, believing that change is more likely to come from member states.
