Fed's Kashkari says tariff negotiations could drag on for years, supports Fed keeping interest rates unchanged

PANews reported on May 27 that Minneapolis Fed President Kashkari said at the Bank of Japan meeting in Tokyo that the US-China tariff negotiations may last for months or even years, and its transmission to inflation will take time to manifest. The current inflation expectations are facing the risk of de-anchoring, so he supports keeping interest rates unchanged. He stressed the need to wait for the impact of tariffs to become clearer before taking action, and pointed out that interest rates are currently "likely to be only moderately restrictive." Although Kashkari is not a voting member of the FOMC this year, his position reflects the cautious attitude of some officials towards policy shifts in a high inflation environment.
