A new scam in Florida fakes McAfee pop-up ads to hijack computers and steal Bitcoin and gold bars

PANews reported on April 14 that according to Bitcoin.com, criminals in Pinellas County, Florida, are using fake security software McAfee pop-ups to defraud local residents by remotely accessing personal computers without authorization. Once control is gained, scammers manipulate victims into transferring money, purchasing gold bars, or withdrawing large amounts of cash through Bitcoin ATMs, which are then picked up by couriers. The economic losses caused by a recent incident exceeded $530,000. The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office warned residents not to disclose sensitive information online or over the phone, and urged residents to report any suspicious interactions. Sheriff's Office officials stressed the need to remain vigilant and said: "We advise citizens not to disclose personal information or account information over the phone or computer."
