PANews reported on May 15th, citing Cointelegraph, that Nigel Farage, leader of the UK Reform Party and a politician, purchased a £1.4 million (approximately $1.8 million) property after receiving a £5 million (approximately $6.7 million) "personal gift" from crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne. The transaction was completed in May 2024, weeks before Farage announced his candidacy for the general election. Farage is currently facing a parliamentary inquiry into the matter, with critics arguing that the gift should have been declared upon his inauguration. Farage and his party maintain that there was no wrongdoing, as the gift was received before he entered politics and is therefore not subject to the same declaration requirements.
The British government pushed forward a legislative proposal in March to temporarily ban encrypted political donations. The bill still needs to be approved by both houses of Parliament and receive royal assent from King Charles III before it can become law.
