PANews reported on June 16th that, according to TechCrunch, Sensor Tower's latest "State of AI 2026" report shows that ChatGPT still holds the top spot in monthly active users (approximately 1.1 billion) among global AI assistant apps, but its market share fell below 50% for the first time at the end of May this year, dropping to 46.4%. Google Gemini's share rose to 27.7%, Anthropic Claude rose to 10.3%, and Grok, Perplexity, DeepSeek, and Meta AI each had individual shares below 5%. The report points out that OpenAI's signing with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) triggered a wave of uninstalls, showing that brand values influence user choices. Global AI app downloads are projected to reach approximately 2.3 billion in the first half of 2026, with user spending reaching approximately $4.2 billion. While growth is slowing, paid subscription and subscription conversion rates are increasing, with Claude leading major assistant apps with a subscription conversion rate of 13%.
ChatGPT's global market share has fallen below 50%, while Gemini and Claude are rapidly closing the gap.
