Nanjing cracks China's largest gold theft case; main suspect broke off gold pieces to pay fare before being caught at border

PANews, June 22 – According to the Chongzuo Border Management Detachment, Tong, the prime suspect in the "May 16" extraordinarily large gold theft case in Nanjing, Jiangsu, was successfully intercepted while fleeing to the China-Vietnam border. The gold involved in the case weighed 27 kilograms and was valued at over 27 million RMB, making it the largest gold theft case by value in China to date. Police reported that after committing the crime, Tong fled south by ride-hailing car for over 2,000 kilometers. Unable to pay the fare of over 7,000 RMB in cash, he even broke off half of a 50-gram gold piece to cover the fare. He was ultimately captured just 100 meters from the border. Police subsequently arrested all 11 suspects and recovered all the stolen gold.
