PANews reported on October 16th that, according to Decrypt, a Washington, D.C. coffee shop this week became the first merchant in the world to accept Bitcoin payments through Square point-of-sale terminals. Compass Coffee, a popular chain of 27 locations in Washington, D.C., showcased the new technology during DC Fintech Week, allowing customers to pay for coffee using Bitcoin via the Lightning Network through standard Square cash registers. This pilot marks the first real-world deployment of the new Bitcoin payment system announced by Square's parent company, Blockchain, last Wednesday. Starting November 10th, merchants will be able to accept Bitcoin payments and convert up to 50% of their daily sales into Bitcoin, with zero fees for the first year.
