PANews reported on November 19 that according to Bloomberg, people familiar with the matter revealed that Damian Williams, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, has shared his plan with colleagues after Trump's election this month that he will resign before Donald Trump takes office next January, marking the end of his tenure of actively prosecuting Wall Street crimes. Trump announced last week that he would appoint Jay Clayton to replace Williams, who served as chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission until 2020.
The preemptive move will allow Williams to leave on his own terms, with Deputy U.S. Attorney Ed Kim taking over the top job on an interim basis. Williams and many other U.S. attorneys across the country appointed by President Biden will almost certainly be replaced once Trump takes office. Most U.S. attorneys stay on until they are formally asked to leave.
